From glencheck to gingham to tartan and vichy, check patterns have been an integral part of fashion for months. While at the beginning of the checkered trend it was mainly the small patterned variations such as the classic houndstooth, the large tartan pattern is now also experiencing a fashion revival. And I can’t get around this trend either.

From tartan skirts to the punk movement to modern times

Tartan is probably first and foremost associated with the classic tartan skirt. Since the 16th century, Scottish kilts have been a symbol of the affiliation of certain clans.

In the 1970s the pattern became the tool of the punk movement. If the tartan stands for tradition and aristocracy in Great Britain, the punks used it to protest against society with new, deconstructed cuts.

The pattern, which has anchored tradition and protest equally in itself, is also very popular on the catwalks. Last but not least, fashion rebel Vivienne Westwood reinterprets tartan again and again.

Traditional and rebellious

This history makes the pattern so exciting and versatile: it can be combined elegantly and traditionally, almost well-behaved. You can also style it punkish and rebellious.

My current look with my new tartan shorts is actually rather well-behaved, but with a fashionable break in style. Everything is beautifully coordinated in terms of colour. The white bag stands out a bit, but the highlight are my red cowboy boots. The colour fits, but the cowboy shape would certainly not be the first thing you would expect from tartan. And yet, or perhaps just because of that, it also fits in perfectly with this special pattern: Traditionally rebellious!

Private: Shock message and spring weather

I just want to briefly tell you what moves me personally right now and why I am a little less active at the moment, here and on Instagram…
My father’s brother passed away last week. He was only 50 and was diagnosed with cancer last year. However, the news came very suddenly and shocked. Personally I had hardly had any contact with him for years (he lived in Bavaria), but my dad usually called his brother several times a week and for my grandparents it must be so incredibly difficult to lose their child… It’s just bad to have to see and hear your loved ones suffer so much. You feel powerless and find it hard to find the right words. Nevertheless, I hope that they will soon be able to make peace and comfort themselves with the fact that my uncle has gone to sleep before even worse times would have befallen him.

Since my dad went directly to Bavaria, as did my grandparents from Mecklenburg, I brought my mum to us on Saturday and cooked something delicious. She is currently on sick leave herself and therefore couldn’t join my Dad. Before Dominik and I enjoyed the sun a little bit. Also yesterday the weather was a dream (although frighteningly warm for February). After a very bad migraine night we were out and about a lot yesterday, too.

I wish you a nice week and always tell your loved ones how much you love them! :-)
